A power distribution center is used to route positive battery power throughout the vehicle using relays and fuses. This center is powered directly off of the positive post of the battery using a positive battery cable.

Once the wire problem is located, typically the damaged wire or two can be repaired, or a new piece of wire can be spliced in. But sometimes the damage is more extensive, wires are melted, or a hard-to-reach location makes repair impossible.

It’s not uncommon to see people wire radios to the fuse box by inserting the power wire directly into a fuse slot and then inserting a fuse on top of it. Although this may work, it is also dangerous and could damage your new radio or create a potential fire hazard. You should also avoid using a fuse with a higher amperage rating than that specified for your new radio or stereo. While the radio will still work, you defeat the purpose of the fuse by using one with a higher amp rating. A fuse amp rating indicates how much current, in amperes, the circuit can withstand before the fuse blows. If you use a fuse with too high a rating, it may not blow or fail in time to prevent damage to your radio. For instance, using a fuse rated at 25 amps with a 15-amp car radio may allow too much current to pass through the circuit and cause irreparable damage to the stereo.

As wires carry electricity they get hot, so it is possible after a lot of use for a connection to melt and no longer make contact. If the connect is outside of the cabin of the car it could get rusty or dirty to the point where electricity will no longer flow. It is also possible that from use and vibrations the wires simply disconnect. In this case you need a wiring diagram for your vehicle, a circuit tester and a lot of patience.
By Lazare Anthelme. Car Electrical Wiring. Published at Sunday, November 12th 2017, 05:27:40 AM. While OEM and aftermarket wiring manufacturers alike combine multiple devices on single circuits, they take various things like current draw, wire gauge, and fuse capacity into consideration. For example, adding accessories to an existing circuit may require a greater-capacity fuse, which may cause problems if that fuse’s capacity exceeds the capacity of any single wire in that circuit. Should a wire find ground or its accessory fail in such a case, the wire may catch fire without ever blowing its circuit’s fuse.

Since electrons flow along the surface of a conductor and not through the conductor, a conductor of equivalent size with more and finer strands can carry more current.
