Alternators are actually small generators capable of turning mechanical into electrical energy. Driven by the engine belt, alternators use a small signal from the battery to energize a field current that turns a rotor inside a set of stators. Since this energy is driven by the polarity of magnetic fields, the current produced as a result changes direction as the rotor turns, producing current in opposite or alternating directions (hence AC). Alternators produce significantly higher currents than initially supplied by the battery, so they are used to recharge the battery itself and power other electrical components.

Components commonly connected to the wiring harness include the on-board diagnostic computer and fuel-injection system of many vehicles, auxiliary lights and dashboard controls. The emissions system and similar electrical components also connect directly to the harness, as do turn signals and other required systems. On many automobile wiring harnesses, the connectors and wires that connect these systems swap out easily for quick repairs and replacement.

Inside the PDC are many fuses and relays which protect and control the many electrical circuits such as fuel pump and fuel injection systems. Fuses are used to safeguard electrical circuits and are designed to pop stopping the voltage flow in the event of a power overload or short circuit protecting the circuit wire from burning.

There’s nothing wrong with a one-wire alternator but theoretically they aren’t as effective as their OEM-style counterparts of equal capacity. It’s because one of the additional wires in an OEM-style alternator senses the system voltage.

If your vehicle has an upgraded version of the factory sound system (such as a Bose or Harman Kardon upgrade, for example) or an integrated stereo/climate control panel, you will probably need a special factory system wiring adapter in order to install a new stereo. An adapter allows you to use a new stereo with your existing speaker system.

Notice that battery voltage travels through a high current wire (red) through the relay to the horn and also through a smaller wire (blue) through the ignition switch to the relay's low-current coil. The first thing you should be aware of is that the horn circuit is always "hot" or "live" when the ignition switch is turned on and all that's needed is a path to ground.

A device connector is used to connect to a particular item in the electrical system such as ignition coils which are shown in the image below. A safety is used to securely attach the connector to a device which adds an extra layer of protection from accidental disconnection. This safety clip must be removed before the connector can be released.

As wires carry electricity they get hot, so it is possible after a lot of use for a connection to melt and no longer make contact. If the connect is outside of the cabin of the car it could get rusty or dirty to the point where electricity will no longer flow. It is also possible that from use and vibrations the wires simply disconnect. In this case you need a wiring diagram for your vehicle, a circuit tester and a lot of patience.
