Naturally the chassis and body need to ground on the same component, but Fox suggested grounding critical components like the headlights, taillights, and dashboard directly to the engine block or transmission.

Every wire in the harness carries energy and signals important for starting the engine, navigation system, meters, lights, power doors, and windows, along with other devices. The wiring can be of different types like cold-resistant wires, heat-resistant wires, more flexible wires, depending on the areas where they will travel inside the system of a vehicle. The harnessing in different vehicles can vastly vary on the basis of the purposes the harness is required for.

Like most seemingly complicated things, automotive electrical systems are collections of very simple assemblies. And lucky for us, there’s no secret as to how these things work. It boils down to basic technique. Do a few things right and you’re assured many trouble-free years of service.

These relay's act as electronic switches that are controlled by the computer or by a manual switch. Once engaged the relay connects a circuit which activates a particular device.

A power distribution center is used to route positive battery power throughout the vehicle using relays and fuses. This center is powered directly off of the positive post of the battery using a positive battery cable.

It would be impossible to remove one of these systems (fuel, for example) and still have a car that drives. So while you can’t necessarily say the car electrical system is the “most important,” it does come pretty close — especially as the technology veers toward a hybrid and electric future. Here is a quick overview of electrical system components and a look into how conventional gas engine-powered vehicles use electricity.

The crankcase is located beneath the cylinder block. The crankcase protects the crankshaft and connecting rods from outside objects. The area at the bottom of a crankcase is called the oil pan and that’s where your engine’s oil is stored. Inside the oil pan, you’ll find an oil pump that pumps oil through a filter, and then that oil is squirted on to the crankshaft, connecting rod bearings, and cylinder walls to provide lubrication to the movement of the piston stroke. The oil eventually drips back down into the oil pan, only to begin the process again

A short circuit is what happens when a wire has rubbed through to ground causing a fuse to blow. An open circuit is what happens when a connection stops working because of a broken wire or a bad conductivity. Low battery voltage can cause strange problems to the electrical components of the car due to insufficient operating voltage. Because of the construction of wiring connectors they can sometimes create high resistance which causes heat making the connector have an open circuit. When performing wiring repairs a wiring schematic is sometimes necessary to trace wires or locate a component.
