The other major issue within a car electrical system is that not all components tolerate the same amount of current strength or amperage. Therefore, the system must include voltage regulators and fuses to moderate flow and protect components that cannot handle the amperage supplied by the alternator. Fuses protect circuits when placed in front of the load (component). If a voltage spike causes too much amperage sent to the headlights, a fuse designed to “blow” at 15 amps will do so, preventing the current from continuing on to cook the headlight itself.

Before performing any work on your vehicle always be sure to disconnect and ideally, remove the battery from the vehicle. You should be able to take off the negative, then positive terminal clamps with a socket wrench, and then set the battery somewhere cool, out of the sun, and away from your work space.

Alternators are actually small generators capable of turning mechanical into electrical energy. Driven by the engine belt, alternators use a small signal from the battery to energize a field current that turns a rotor inside a set of stators. Since this energy is driven by the polarity of magnetic fields, the current produced as a result changes direction as the rotor turns, producing current in opposite or alternating directions (hence AC). Alternators produce significantly higher currents than initially supplied by the battery, so they are used to recharge the battery itself and power other electrical components.

Before you begin, start by setting the parking brake and removing the negative cable from the car battery to prevent accidentally short circuiting something. Your factory stereo will most often be mounted in one of the following ways: – secured in a metal mounting sleeve by spring clips – bolted to the dash with brackets – mounted to a rail system inside the dash

The piston rings are the part that actually touch the walls of the cylinder. They are made from iron and come in two varieties: compression rings and oil rings. The compression rings are the top rings and they press outward on the walls of the cylinder to provide a strong seal for the combustion chamber. The oil ring is the bottom ring on a piston and it prevents oil from the crankcase from seeping into the combustion chamber. It also wipes excess oil down the cylinder walls and back into the crankcase.

If there is no connector pin, unscrew the fuse box connector screw with a screwdriver. Strip 1/2 inch of sheathing from the wire with a wire crimper tool. Slide the bare wire under the connector and tighten the screw.

By Bertrand Rainier. Engine Wiring. Published at Monday, February 19th 2018, 18:25:32 PM. The engine harness is typically a large bundle of individual wires protected by a shell of insulation and conduit which helps to protect it from the elements. It is often asymmetrical, with the large end close to the fuse box and becoming smaller as it branches out over the engine. Since the various automobile manufacturers have different engine designs which also change over time, engine wiring harnesses are often unique to the year, make and model of a vehicle. Because of its proximity to the engine as well as contaminants on the road, engine wiring harnesses can degrade and require repair or replacement.
