Take your drawings to a copier that enlarges and blow them up to easily-readable size. Tape all the sheets together into one big drawing an you will find that tracing electrical paths becomes very straightforward.

Notice that battery voltage travels through a high current wire (red) through the relay to the horn and also through a smaller wire (blue) through the ignition switch to the relay's low-current coil. The first thing you should be aware of is that the horn circuit is always "hot" or "live" when the ignition switch is turned on and all that's needed is a path to ground.

When a lobe lifts one end of the rocker, the other end of the rocker presses down on the valve stem, opening the valve to let air in to the combustion chamber or letting exhaust out. It works sort of like a see-saw.

Along the crankshaft you’ll find balancing lobes that act as counterweights to balance the crankshaft and prevent engine damage from the wobbling that occurs when the crankshaft spins. Also along the crankshaft you’ll find the main bearings. The main bearings provide a smooth surface between the crankshaft and engine block for the crankshaft to spin.

A short circuit is what happens when a wire has rubbed through to ground causing a fuse to blow. An open circuit is what happens when a connection stops working because of a broken wire or a bad conductivity. Low battery voltage can cause strange problems to the electrical components of the car due to insufficient operating voltage. Because of the construction of wiring connectors they can sometimes create high resistance which causes heat making the connector have an open circuit. When performing wiring repairs a wiring schematic is sometimes necessary to trace wires or locate a component.

It’s not uncommon to see people wire radios to the fuse box by inserting the power wire directly into a fuse slot and then inserting a fuse on top of it. Although this may work, it is also dangerous and could damage your new radio or create a potential fire hazard. You should also avoid using a fuse with a higher amperage rating than that specified for your new radio or stereo. While the radio will still work, you defeat the purpose of the fuse by using one with a higher amp rating. A fuse amp rating indicates how much current, in amperes, the circuit can withstand before the fuse blows. If you use a fuse with too high a rating, it may not blow or fail in time to prevent damage to your radio. For instance, using a fuse rated at 25 amps with a 15-amp car radio may allow too much current to pass through the circuit and cause irreparable damage to the stereo.

The solution is a set of diodes that serve as a kind of electrical check valve for current coming out of the alternator. Diodes only allow current to flow in one direction, so when AC goes in on one side, only DC comes out on the other.

Like everything else in this world, there are varying degrees of wire quality. For years the standby wire insulation was Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC. Relatively tough, flexible, and inexpensive, it gets the job done, however, PVC is a thermoplastic. And like other thermoplastics like lacquers and synthetic enamels, it tends to oxidize and brittle with age.

Harnesses are wrapped in a protective covering and then routed and secured throughout the vehicle to protect them from damage. But life for vehicles can get tough. Constant vibration, flexing, exposure to heat and cold, water, ice, and salt can all eventually take a toll on the wiring. Wiring harness damage is also not unusual when a vehicle has been involved in a collision.
